Meet An Indie Agency: SPCSHP

The agency formerly known as Big Spaceship continues to shoot for the stars 24 years later

When Harvard Business School has not one, but two case studies written about your agency…you’re kind of a big deal.

Such is the case for SPCSHP, the agency formerly known as Big Spaceship, whose collaborative model and internal culture is as innovative and lauded as their client work.

IAN spoke with founder and Executive Chairman, Michael Lebowitz, and CEO, Ranae Heuer about how, nearly a quarter century later, they continue to shoot for the stars…with great success.

  • Founded: 2000
  • Location: Brooklyn, NY (with hubs in Seattle and Detroit and a 30% remote team)

Best-known for

While the answer may depend on the era in which its work is discovered,  SPCSHP’s more recent work as AOR for Starbucks is probably its best known. Other notable work from the agency was 2007’s HBO Voyeur Project, and 2020’s Super Bowl LIV stunt, in which the NFL celebrated the Kansas City Chiefs victory over the San Francisco 49ers by showering confetti printed with tweets from players and fans all over the field. They’d like to be known for their focus on culture

What are the agency’s core strengths

The agency is incredibly comfortable with, and enjoys a high velocity, high fragmentation, rate of change. And they focus on people instead of on technology.

Why the agency loves being indie

The ability to control their own destiny matters a lot to SPCSHP, insomuch as they can decide what and how they want to pursue certain things, and what things they don’t want to pursue. They value being nimble, which has allowed them to try new things over 24 years and not have to be in one box. They also enjoy having the freedom to focus on their business in different ways and the ability to take new risks that holding company agencies beholden to concerns about carrying overhead costs can’t.

Why brands should work with this agency

Brands looking for a full service agency that has their finger on the pulse of culture and values being a good whole partner that is incredibly diligent, rigorous and will keep showing up every day for them should look no further.

Why talent should put this agency on their list

SPCSHP considers themselves a community of people who are professionally curious,  treat people like humans instead of robots, and believe that accountability and ownership drives everything forward, and contributes to better work in the end. Talent looking to learn, grow and thrive have a place there.

Marketer shout out

“I really genuinely liked the guy. We compare and share books we’re reading and I think he feels like a kindred spirit in that world of professional curiosity. [Getting quality time with him] would be time well spent.”

Michael Lebowitz
