Luxury Sells a Feeling. This Fragrance Sells a Lifeline

Doctors Without Borders and Mediaplus Germany turned the perfume sample into a surprising case for basic medical care in crisis regions.

The page looks like every fragrance ad in a premium magazine. Soft florals, a gleaming bottle and a little sachet promising something indulgent.

So you peel it.

Itโ€™s disinfectant.

In a beauty aisle, thatโ€™s a jolt. In the crisis regions where Doctors Without Borders works, itโ€™s a lifeline.

Thatโ€™s โ€œA Fragrance Without Borders,โ€ a Germany-wide campaign from Doctors Without Borders (Mรฉdecins Sans Frontiรจres, MSF) and Mediaplus, the media agency of the independent Serviceplan Group.

A sense nobody has tuned out

The problem MSF faced is one every cause marketer knows: crisis fatigue. People see the images, hear the appeals and keep moving.

So the campaign goes through the nose.

โ€œToday, many people no longer listen to NGOs. Thatโ€™s why this time we decided not to communicate through words, but through another sense: smell,โ€ says Nicole Huwendiek, Senior Advisor Integrated Fundraising Campaigns at Doctors Without Borders.

โ€œUsing disinfectant as a fragrance sample disrupts a familiar context and draws attention to something truly life-changing: access to basic medical care,โ€ she adds.

Disinfectant is a smell almost everyone can place in a second. That recognition is the whole idea.

A lifeline in perfume-ad clothes

The print ads wear full fragrance-campaign dress, sachet and all, under the line โ€œThis Fragrance Knows No Borders.โ€ The product on offer is the one that protects patients and medical teams in crisis regions around the world.

Itโ€™s a luxury pitch for the plainest item in a field kit. And the argument underneath is simple: health is the ultimate luxury.

Context is the media plan

This is where Mediaplus earns its credit. The sachets run where people go shopping for a feeling โ€” premium beauty, lifestyle and news titles.

Postcards with samples go out through online fragrance retailer Flaconi and sit in selected beauty salons. Digital out-of-home brings it to the street, including placements near fragrance retailers like Douglas on the Kurfรผrstendamm, Berlinโ€™s best-known shopping boulevard.

โ€œAttention is not a function of reach alone. An idea comes to life through context,โ€ says Elke Reibetanz, Managing Partner at Mediaplus Berlin. โ€œBy reinterpreting a familiar advertising format, we create an unexpected touchpoint that encourages people to pause for a moment and take notice of the vital work carried out by Doctors Without Borders.โ€

Coming from a media agency, thatโ€™s a creative brief in two sentences.

A partnership with a long fuse

Mediaplus has handled cross-media strategy and planning for MSFโ€™s German fundraising since 2021. This campaign came out of the Mediaplus Creative Collective, led by Global CCO Maximilian Schรถngen, which also ran the creative execution.

The core scented-print concept was developed with REPUBLIC Marketing & Media Solutions. The campaign launched October 1 and runs through November across print, retail and digital out-of-home.

The measure that matters

Reibetanz is clear about the goal. โ€œIf our campaign helps increase donations for humanitarian aid, it has achieved its purpose,โ€ she says.

On a magazine page, the scent fades in a minute. The lifeline behind it is built to last.
