Freakfort: Music Comes Alive in AR

Four smartphones display interactive website screens for Freakfort, featuring music event information, artwork, and artist profiles against a black background with a #indiework Live banner.
Enhancing a Boise institution

If you’re in Boise, Idaho (or have ever visited), you may have heard about the Treefort Music Fest, which takes place there – and in Utah – annually during the March Spring break. (And if neither applies, you’re about to learn a little about the  Boise culture scene. You’re welcome.)

For this episode of #IndieWork, we dive into Freakfort, a really cool project created by Boise-based agency, Drake Cooper, that used web-based augmented reality to enhance festival-goers’ experience; showing local musicians and artists some love by pairing bands with animated murals.

IAN spoke with Drake Cooper’s Director of UX & Technology, Steve Norell, to learn more about the agency, the festival, the Boise market and how they made a music festival even more awesome with AR.

Check it out, and start planning your trip to Boise for next year’s festival!

In this episode, Steve takes us through:

  • His agency background
  • Background on Treefort festival in Boise
  • The Freakfort project overview
  • Leaning into the nerdy AR stuff
  • The Boise market and how it has changed
